I'm not sure I wholly believe that. However, the breakdown of the ego-boundary, most commonly experienced with hallucinogenic drugs/experiences (absinthe, LSD, mushrooms etc), may also be a disturbing experience.
For one thing, if you experience 'heaven in a teardrop, and the world in a grain of sand', it can be very disheartening to crush it back into the soil and drudgery of imperfection.
On the other hand, opening your mind to the wonder of said-things can really brighten otherwise drudgery of life. Fascination.
